European Week for Waste Reduction: Slovenia focuses on reducing food waste

SLOVENIA, November 19 - This year's theme is reducing food waste, which exceeds 58 million tons annually in the European Union, 54% of which is generated by households.

The initiative, launched in 2009, connects local, national and European players and raises awareness about the necessity of reducing, reusing and recycling waste. This year, Slovenia is participating in several high-profile activities that appeal to all generations.

In this year's campaigns, Slovenia is responding to key challenges that the European Union has identified as key points in the fight against food waste. They address households, where more than half of food waste is generated, through activities such as kitchen diaries, and raises awareness among children in primary schools, as they are often those who introduce sustainable change in families. The Ministry’s biowaste sorting analysis project focuses on obtaining the data necessary for better policymaking and working closely with local communities, which is one of the foundations of a sustainable food system in Europe.
